Chris Stapleton

I don’t listen to much (or any) contemporary country, but I’ve been curious to hear more of Chris Stapleton since seeing him perform the national anthem at Super Bowl LVII. Much of what I liked about his performance is present on this album: dynamic and smooth phrasing, simple instrumentation, and an honest and genuine representation of the music.

Ann Power’s comparison to a “soft denim jacket” is spot on:

pulled out time after time, lending comfort, suiting every occasion, with treasure stuffed in every pocket.

The first half of this album is stellar, especially “More Of You.” It’s easy to see why Stapleton has crossover appeal, and I plan to listen to more of his music!
