HIT ME HARD AND SOFT

Billie Eilish

HIT ME HARD AND SOFT is easily some of the best music I’ve heard this year. Billie Eilish continues to make surprising, catchy, and exciting music that is uniquely Billie and unlike anything else.

There’s an incredible amount of detail, but the music is never heavy. Chihiro, for example, has numerous subtle vocal and instrumental tracks yet remains light and undemanding to listen to.

Despite FINNEAS producing tracks in a wide array of genres, the album is highly cohesive without being boring. Live drums throughout the album added depth missing from her earlier work, and all the beats are instant earworms.

Some of my favorite parts of this album are the times I was most surprised, such as the transition into the bridge of “THE GREATEST,” which initially seems like a metric modulation, and some of the breaks in “CHIHIRO.”

Favorite tracks: “CHIHIRO,” “BIRDS OF A FEATHER,” “THE GREATEST,” and “BITTERSUITE.”
