Heard It In A Past Life

Maggie Rogers

I finally watched the legendary Pharrell masterclass video and listened to this album. (I listened to this album a few times while on walks, maybe two or three years ago, but I never listened closely.) We’re lucky to be able to watch Pharrell’s real-time reactions as he hears “Alaska” for the first time, and listening to the track again, it brings back memories of similar reactions during my first listen.

This album is a banger and highly replayable. The melodies are infectious, but, for me, the rhythmic and syncopated drive makes this album a standout and gives it endless forward momentum (I think this quality could make it perfect road trip material).

The tracks can, at times, sound repetitive, but the tracks are so good that they instead turn cyclical. “Fallingwater,” with Rogers’ soaring vocals, is one of my favorites, while “On + Off“‘s heavy percussive layering and syncopation make it my favorite.

Favorite tracks: “On + Off,” “Fallingwater,” “Retrograde,” and “Alaska”
